AXONS

2/01 The purpose of this study was to compare magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features and proton MR spectroscopy (1H-MRS) patterns of multiple sclerosis (MS) plaques in order to define the metabolic substrate in different lesion subtypes.

2/9/00  Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Montreal-Neurological Institute, McGill University, Canada.  A patient was followed after the new onset of hemiparesis from relapse of MS with serial MR spectroscopy and functional MRI. The association of clinical improvement with recovery of N-acetylhtmlartate, a marker of neuronal integrity, and progressive reduction of abnormally large functional MRI cortical activation with movement demonstrates that dynamic reorganization of the motor cortex accompanies remission of MS.

2/6/00 Imaging and pathomorphological studies in multiple sclerosis suggest that Axonal injury and axonal loss are playing a crucial role in those with persistent disability and long-standing disease.

COGNITION

The purpose of this Study was to illustrate how cognitive functioning evolves over time in patients with multiple sclerosis.

COPAXONE ®(COP-1)

3/7/01 Relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis patients treated with Copaxone® (glatiramer acetate fo injection) showed rapid effect on almost all MRI-monitored disease activity and burden of disease parameters. These parameters correlated with reduction in relapse rates compared to placebo, according to a multi-center, placebo-controlled study published this month in the Annals of Neurology. The study found a 29 percent reduction in enhancing lesions compared with placebo.

3/1/99 Clinical Trials announced.

CRRY

12/99 BIRMINGHAM, Ala., -- Researchers at UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) have shown that by manipulating the Immune System they can prevent or slow the progression of multiple sclerosis (MS) in mice.

CYTOKINES

1/2000 The immune system is involved in the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis (MS) but the initiating antigen(s) is not yet identified. Since cytokines control both the intensity and the quality of the immune response they may be relevant candidates for the genetic susceptibility to MS.

DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

Fampridine-SR

1/18/01 Acorda Therapeutics announced today that it has begun a Phase 2 clinical study of its lead product, Fampridine-SR, for multiple sclerosis (MS).

FATIGUE

1/2000 Chronic fatigue syndrome is defined as idiopathic chronic fatigue plus any four of eight symptoms: fatigue lasting more than 24 hours following exercise; memory or concentration problems; tiredness upon waking in the morning; a sore throat; tender cervical or axillary lymph nodes; muscle aches; joint pain; and headaches.

GANGLIOSIDES

When a Molecular Factor normally found in the nervous system is damaged or missing, nerve cells in the brain and body begin to degenerate, according to a new study in mice.

GGF2

2/00 GGF2 diminishes autoimmune demyelination, promotes oligodendrocyte progenitor expansion, and enhances remyelination.

12/98 Cambridge NeuroScience and its academic collaborators have generated impressive data demonstrating the unique mechanism by which GGF2 stimulates the remyelination of nerve cells,'' said David Lowe, Ph.D., head of CNS research at Bayer. ``The companies have worked together in developing a manufacturing process for the molecule.''

GENETICS

2/01 Sibling Risk for MS

3/98 ST. PAUL, MN -- March 23, 1998 -- A new study helps determine the risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS) for SIBLINGS of MS patients. The study is published in this month’s issue of Neurology

GLUTAMATE

HELSINKI

Declaration of Helsinki Recommendations guiding physicians in biomedical research involving human subjects. Adopted by the 18th World Medical Assembly, Helsinki Finland, June 1964 amended by the 29th World Medical Assembly, Tokyo, Japan, October 1975 35th World Medical Assembly, Venice, Italy, October 1983 and the 41st World Medical Assembly, Hong Kong, September 1989.

HEPATITIS B VACCINE

6/14/99 It is apparent that Critical Medical Decisions for an entire generation of
American children are being made by small committees whose members have
incestuous ties with agencies that stand to gain power, or manufacturers that stand to gain enormous profits, from the policy that is made.

8/18/98  Reports linking Hepatitis B vaccination to multiple sclerosis are is not confirmed.  Studies are being conducted in the US and Europe.

1/9/97 We are trying to identify more patients with autoimmune disorders that might be related to the Hepatitis B Vaccine in order to find a better way to prevent, diagnose, and treat such reactions. Since it is clearly established that this vaccine (or the virus infection itself) may cause MS like symptoms, your information could be a great help for our ongoing research.

HERPES

10/19/98  Have they found a Viral Link to MS_  Dr. Konstance K. Knox of the Institute for Viral Pathogenesis in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and colleagues at the American Neurological Association report a study may point in that direction.  Knox said "the study cannot conclusively determine whether HHV-6 is a cause or effect of the disease."

11/24/97 Specualtion: A strain of Reactivated Herpes virus may be associated with multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks its own tissues.

Ibuprofen

06/99 ST. PAUL, MN -- Ibuprofen has been shown to reduce the "flu-like" side effects of the drug interferon beta-1b, an effective treatment for multiple sclerosis attacks, according to a study in the June issue of Neurology, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

IgG / IVIG

10/00 A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial of IV immunoglobulin (IVIg) was performed in patients with MS who had persistent muscle weakness that had been stable for between 4 and 18 months to determine whether this would improve muscle strength (primary outcome: isometric muscle strength). Patients received either IVIg (0.4 g/kg) or placebo daily for 5 days, then single infusions every 2 weeks for 3 months (total, 11 infusions).

7/99 Administration of high-dose intravenous immunoglobulins has become one of the most successful new treatment regimens for demyelinating diseases.

4/98 In an attempt to prevent exacerbations of multiple sclerosis, Immunoglobulin Therapy was combined with azathioprine (AZA). Intravenous immunoglobulin (i.v.IG) 2 g/kg was given in divided doses over 3 consecutive days followed by monthly booster doses (0.2 g/kg) for 3 years to 38 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS).

7/98 IgG and MS .  Medline Abstract

3/3/97 Monthly intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIg) administration to patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) improves "...the course of clinical disability and reduce[s] the frequency of relapses."
