Dealing With A New Doctor

At some point, you will probably be faced with having to change your doctor. This can be a little daunting. You are facing someone new and are probably very uncomfortable with. It can be difficult to discuss your health issues with a new doctor. Unlike the old one, your new doctor knows you only by your records. Thus, there is an uncertainty when it comes down to the doctor visit. It is very natural to be a little nervous at the doctor’s office.

Put yourself at ease prior to the visit by bringing a familiar item to distract you in the waiting room. It can be a familiar book or magazine to read. It might be a calming activity or a quiet little game. Distract yourself to keep you from thinking about the impending doctor visit. This will keep your nervousness down to a more manageable level.

If possible, take some one with you to keep you company while waiting. Sometimes, they can come into the room with you when you meet your new doctor. They can help you ease some of the stress and tension when you first meet. It is easier to have someone beside you for moral support. Furthermore, they can help you address any issues that you may have forgotten to address during your initial visit.

Upon meeting the doctor, they should put you at ease with some basic answerable questions. If it makes you feel more comfortable, let them do the talking first. It is fine to express your nervousness to your new doctor. The doctor usually will be very understanding about your hesitation. It may take a few visits to become comfortable with your new doctor. But don’t let your nervousness stop you from discussing what is truly important with your doctor, your health.
