Carnivore’s Beware

Many a man has sung the praises of a perfectly cooked steak and would eat red meat everyday of their lives if possible. These food choices may be tasty but research is showing that a diet high in red and processed meats can be detrimental to good health. Those who eat large amounts of processed meats such as lunch meat, hot dogs and sausages increase their risk of colon cancer by 50%.

How much red meat is acceptable for good health? roughly 2, 4 oz portions a week. Choosing lean cuts of meat and trimming away extra fat can also make meat meals healthier. Red meat cooked at high temperatures form chemicals that cause cancer in animals so it is recommended to cook meats at lower temps and avoid meat that has been blackened or charred.

How can carnivore’s cut back? It really will take a change in the way we think about meat. Instead of an anytime meal, red meat should be thought of as a special treat. Planning meals for the month ahead of time and increasing dishes of chicken or fish will also help limit red meat splurges. Studies show that those who eat red meat everyday are seriously endangering their health and increasing the risk of certain cancers. This doesn’t mean that red meat can never be enjoyed only that it should be relished in moderation.

Like any other lifestyle change a carnivore may have trouble shifting gears but they can be reassured that in time their new habits will stick and become just as enjoyable as the old ones. The fact that no one is recommending going completely vegetarian should also offer comfort, just knowing that your favorite foods don’t have to be cut out entirely. Simply making the decision to eat healthy and creating a plan to do so will be what helps carnivores stay on the wagon and lessen their cravings.
