If your doctor prescribes a medicine that doesn’t seem right for your symptom, it’s good to know the alternate benefit of medicines. Drugs are formulated to take care of certain symptoms, but often times, it is discovered they have secondary benefits that can be helpful, too. Here are a few medicines with alternate benefits.
Trazodone
This medicine is an anti-depressant and anti-anxiety drug. The medical community has used it for many years to improve mental health. However, it also makes a good sleep aide. Sometimes a doctor will prescribe it to a patient who suffers from insomnia. Whether the person wants to admit it or not, they may have some anxiety problems that make this medicine a good choice. The doctor may suggest it for the alternative benefits of the medicine, when in fact, he knows that sleeplessness is related to anxiety. It’s just easier for some people to accept they are tired rather than suffering from compromised mental health.
Diphenhydramine
We know this medicine as Benedryl. It is typically used to control allergic reactions. It also makes a good sleep aide. In fact, if you look at sleep aide medicines, like Simply Sleep, you’ll see it’s diphenhydramine! Usually one pill will do the trick. Two could mean grogginess the next day. Diphenhydramine is also used to treat nausea.
Viagra
Yes. This is the love medicine. But did you know that it was originally formulated to treat hypertension and heart disease? Since the drug was created to increase blood flow, it was discovered to help increase blood flow to other places, too. Now this medicine is primarily marketed to improve the sexual health of a man. If Viagra is being prescribed, there are probably other underlying health issues going on.
Never take a medicine for anything but its intended use without consulting a doctor.
